In the mid-to-late 1990s, it seemed like these two teams always met in the postseason, and it was always a fierce, bruising battle. Of course, neither team to broke through to win a title, playing second fiddle to Michael Jordan and the Bulls like the rest of the league. But the rivalry has been a bit renewed these days for a few reasons, and when the Knicks visit Miami and take the Heat on Thursday night, it will be a very intriguing and anticipated game.

The Knicks were going to have a revival this year. It would be the first full year with Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudamire playing together, and those two superstars would carry the squad and make them into a legitimate force in the Eastern Conference. Things didn’t go quite as planned though, and the team struggled badly out of the gates, and then before long Anthony was missing games with injuries, Stoudamire was out of the lineup for personal reasons, and new acquisitions like Baron Davis still hadn’t suited up.

The Heat, of course, were the stars of last season, and the villains. The super team comprised of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh was supposed to be unstoppable, and begin winning the six or seven championships they all promised. Of course, they lost in the NBA Finals, and now this season have been on a mission. They do indeed look like the team to beat now, as they have been playing fantastic ball and getting big contributions from all three of the big three.

The Heat have been the hottest team in the league, even hotter than the Knicks. Another advantage in their favor is that they will be playing at home here. Last, and not least, the Knicks have lost two of their last three games as they have been struggling to work Anthony, Stoudamire, Davis and J.R. Smith into the fold with Lin and the lineup that had been winning them so many games.

It all adds up to a strong home showing for the Heat, and another victory for the game. If these two meet again in the postseason, the rivalry will truly be renewed, and the Knicks will have had enough time to figure things out and be a real threat. Now though, Miami won’t have a problem at home against New YorkSIYA♥http://www.blogger.com/profile/01174507467236741049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6379101825670636631.post-28688728641577579652012-02-22T07:04:00.003-08:002012-02-22T07:07:07.143-08:00New York Knicks At AtlantaThe last time we saw the Los Angeles Lakers in Dallas, it resulted in what looks like a sizable shift in the direction of the Lakers franchise.
Madison Square Garden
Wednesday, February 22,2012
7:30pm

The date was May 8, 2011, and it was Game Four of the Western Conference semifinals. The Lakers entered the playoffs as the huge favorites in the West to reach their fourth-straight NBA Finals—but they were pushed by the New Orleans Hornets and Chris Paul in the first round. Still, not many gave the Mavericks much of a chance in the semis.

By now we all know what happened, as the Mavs finished their stunning sweep on the afternoon of May 8, a 122-86 embarrassment—sending Lakers coach Phil Jackson off to Montana (or wherever the Zen Master is nowadays).

It was the largest margin of a victory in a game that ended a four-game playoff sweep in NBA history. Dallas would go on to upset the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, while the Lakers started asking questions that still haven’t been answered this season.

Los Angeles knew it needed to get some offseason help to get through the West and figured it had the answer in landing Chris Paul—for about 30 minutes—until NBA Commissioner David Stern put the kibosh on the deal.

Then the Lakers shockingly traded star sixth-man Lamar Odom to the Mavericks for essentially a trade exception, something the team still hasn’t used. Clearly the Lakers (19-13) remain flawed, and this week Kobe Bryant vented about whether the team would trade Pau Gasol or not (he was in the Paul three-way trade). Kobe’s point: Either do something now or say Gasol is staying put.

This is the start of an incredibly tough back-to-back as L.A. visits Oklahoma City on Thursday night in the teams’ last game before the All-Star break.

Think there will be any Dwight Howard-to-L.A. rumors at All-Star Weekend in Orlando?

This is the Mavs’ final game before the break.SIYA♥http://www.blogger.com/profile/01174507467236741049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6379101825670636631.post-20327200016226487812012-02-19T08:12:00.000-08:002012-02-19T08:12:39.555-08:00Linsanity Tries to Invade Dirk's TerritoryTwo of the hottest teams in the NBA are set for battle this afternoon, as Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks look to get back on track versus the suddenly-surging Dallas Mavericks at Madison Square Garden.
The Knicks had their season-high seven-game winning streak come to an end with Friday's 89-85 defeat to the lowly New Orleans Hornets and Lin suffered his first loss as a starter (7 games). Lin has brought a surplus amount of energy to New York and is averaging 24.6 points per game in his previous eight. He had 26 points versus New Orleans, but committed a season-high nine turnovers. Lin has turned the ball over at least six times in each of the past five games.

Dallas has ripped off six straight wins and improved to 12-4 in the past 16 contests following Friday's 82-75 come-from-behind win at Philadelphia.

After visiting the Knicks at MSG, the defending champion Mavericks will return to Big D for a three-game homestand versus the Celtics, Lakers and Nets. Dallas swept a home-and-home series with the Knicks a season ago and has won 10 of the last 11 matchups between the teams. It has also won five straight and eight of its last nine at New York.

The last time New York defeated Dallas at the Garden was Jan. 11, 2006 behind three 20-point performances from Stephon Marbury (28), Eddy Curry (21) and Jamal Crawford (25). Stoudemire paced the Knicks with 28.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in two meetings against the Mavericks in 2010-11.SIYA♥http://www.blogger.com/profile/01174507467236741049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6379101825670636631.post-8008284008896091372012-02-17T07:56:00.000-08:002012-02-17T07:56:17.988-08:00Linsanity over Hornets on FridayWhile the incredible emergence of New York's Jeremy Lin has taken the country by storm, many are wondering how this overnight success story will coexist with Carmelo Anthony upon his return.

That question could be answered shortly.

Lin and Anthony might be in the starting lineup together as the Knicks go for an eighth straight win Friday night at Madison Square Garden against the lowly New Orleans Hornets.

Anthony was in the starting lineup for Lin's first start Feb. 6 against Utah, but left because of a strained right groin after playing less than six minutes and hasn't suited up since. He is expected back either to face New Orleans or for Sunday's game against Dallas.

Lin became the team's primary scorer in Anthony's absence, averaging 27.2 points and 19.6 shots in his first five starts, but proved Wednesday he doesn't need to score for New York to be successful.

After totaling 136 points in his first five starts -- the most by any player since the NBA merged with the ABA in 1976 -- Lin finished with 10 points and a career-best 13 assists in an easy 100-85 win over Sacramento. He sat out the fourth quarter after playing just 26 minutes -- 10 fewer than in any other game since joining the rotation.

New Orleans (6-23) arrives in New York having won back-to-back games after winning just two of its previous 25. The Hornets defeated Milwaukee 92-89 on Wednesday despite dressing only 10 players and being without several key contributors.

Marco Belinelli made a career-high six 3-pointers and had a season-high 22 points for New Orleans, which is again expected to be without Emeka Okafor, Jarrett Jack, Carl Landry and Eric Gordon -- all sidelined with knee problems.

"We're a fighting team," coach Monty Williams said. "We have a little bit of grit about us. It's too bad you don't have a stat for heart and intensity because we'd be at the top of the league."

The Hornets have lost six straight games to the Knicks since a 118-110 victory April 4, 2008.SIYA♥http://www.blogger.com/profile/01174507467236741049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6379101825670636631.post-60210106200311658832012-02-14T19:34:00.000-08:002012-02-14T19:34:14.687-08:00Atlanta Hawks visits LakersThe Los Angeles Lakers have returned home from their road trip and will face the Atlanta Hawks at Staples Center on February 14. You know there is something special brewing in the air as the Lakers return home to their beloved arena on Valentine's Day - it's almost too perfect. The Lakers missed their home dearly as they went 3-3 on their six-game road trip and improved to 5-10 overall away from Staples Center. However, when they play at home, they are 11-2 - making them one of the best home teams in the league.

I know the Lakers can beat the Hawks by playing their brand of basketball - something that has been difficult for the Lakers to do on the road, but at home it seems to come so naturally. Their rebounding and shooting should be better against the Hawks, who are beginning a five-game road trip of their own. That means the Lakers are going to need to knuckle down as the Hawks will surely want to get off to a positive start on their trip.

However, no matter how good the Lakers have been at home, the story of the season so far has been their record on the road. If their record on the road were 10-5 and not 5-10 they would be 21-7 and in second place, just half a game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for first place in the Western Conference. Instead, they sit back in fifth place and do so as a team that has some issues to address. I know the Lakers will welcome the sight of Staples Center in Los Angeles when they tip-off against the Hawks.

The Lakers bench may have to get involved, so that means they will have to be productive against the Hawks. I have to believe the Lakers will regain their shooting touch and earn a win in their first game at home since January 31.

Paul Pierce and Kobe Bryant's teams haven't met since February 10, 2011, when the Lakers prevailed 92-86 behind a 23-point game from Kobe at TD Garden. Boston and Los Angeles split the two-game season series in 2011. In their first meeting of the season, the Celtics overcame Bryant's 41-point performance to capture a 109-96 victory on January 30.
This year, both teams have had their ups and downs. Boston and Los Angeles both dropped their first two games, and they followed their tough starts with winning streaks. This is truly the tale of two teams that should be playing better than they are right now. The exception is Denver’s inadequacies come from injuries, while Dallas’ has been its sputtering offense that has recorded just 86, 87 and 88 points in its last three games.

With Nene and Afflalo expected to return Wednesday, all Denver has to do is get a little more production from Ty Lawson who is second on the team in scoring behind the injured Gallinari, and they should be able get the job done.

Free Pick: Denver 90, Dallas 85–The Nuggies outplayed Dallas in the opener and lead the league with 104.0 PPG. Dallas, despite its offensive woes, has been sound defensively, allowing an average of 91.1 points.
While the Big Three is getting all the attention, the return from injury of Mike Miller gives the Heat another solid rotation player which it more difficult to deal with James and Wade on the wing. Miller had 32 point and 10 rebounds in a recent win over Toronto.
Other than the Packers, this is the class of the NFC, with these teams a combined 27-6. For bettors, these two teams have been awfully profitable, only failing to cover 7 times in 33 combined chances. With each team playing with a honed edge and heightened sense of purpose, this game could be the crown jewel of this postseason.

N.O. beat Detroit badly last Saturday in the first round of the playoffs, with the 49ers getting the week off as the NFC #2 seed. The score of 45-28 suggests a routine victory, but the Saints had a worrisome start, falling behind 14-10 at halftime. Any hopes of a Detroit upset were soon squashed, as the Saints got rolling with 35 second-half points. And there lies the problem for any team facing the Saints--stopping a powerful and diverse offense that seems to actually be getting better. By the end of the day, the Saints had run for 167 yards, with another huge performance from Drew Brees, who threw for 466 yards and 3 touchdowns.

On paper, if any team on the road to the Super Bowl can stop the New Orleans juggernaut, it’s the 49ers. San Francisco has the top-rated defense in the conference and are #2 in the entire league with a scant 14.3 points allowed per game. Then again, they didn’t really face the great offenses this season. It would have been nice going into this game to have seen them contain a team like the Patriots, Packers, or Saints. They never played those teams, so one has to wonder how a secondary ranked #16 will hold up against the Saints’ high-flying attack.

But let’s not allow the sparkling New Orleans offense to blind us from the merit of the 49ers. They were tied for the league-lead with 38 takeaways and led all teams with a mere 10 turnovers on offense. The time off had to help, especially for veteran RB Frank Gore, who despite a good season, sagged a bit to the regular season finish line. The defense will be bolstered by the presence of LB Patrick Willis, who will play after being banged up late in the season. Return threat Ted Ginn, Jr. is also back and can spring one at any time.SIYA♥http://www.blogger.com/profile/01174507467236741049noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6379101825670636631.post-43328817433190371072012-01-13T20:56:00.000-08:002012-01-15T07:40:46.103-08:00NFL PLayoffs SchedulesJanuary 14, 2012

Somehow "Tebow Time" has swept across the nation, as the Broncos find themselves riding a six-game winning streak and are 7-1 with the polarizing quarterback under center.

This team is much more than Tebow though, as they've been sparked defensively by rookie Von Miller, and have benefited from the clutch kicking of Matt Prater.

This will undoubtedly be the Broncos' greatest test, and it just may prove to be the benchmark for whether or not they really can make the playoffs.

Tom Brady and the Patriots will come into town boasting the second best passing offense in the league, averaging 319.3 ypg, and arguably the best non-quarterback in the NFL in tight end Rob Gronkowski.

This game is going to bring out the true colors of both teams involved, and it should be one of the best on the NFL Week 15 docket.

Key Injuries:

Patriots: Did Not Participate In Practice - Safety Patrick Chung (foot), tackle Sebastian Vollmer (back).

Broncos: Did Not Participate In Practice - Safety David Bruton (Achilles), safety Brian Dawkins (neck), cornerback Andre' Goodman (concussion).

Fantasy Big Plays:

Start: You gotta start Tim Tebow here just from a fantasy perspective. He should be able to get points on the ground, and the Patriots are allowing 308.7 yards per game through the air. Even Tebow should be able to throw against them.

Sit: Nobody I would recommend sitting in this game. Ton of great options. Gronkowski, Brady, Welker are all great plays, as are Denver's receivers against the Patriots' defense.

Keys To Patriots Win:
The Patriots need to score touchdowns, which in the end will come down to Tom Brady.

Like it or not the Broncos system isn't made to score a ton of points, so if Brady can get Gronkowski and Welker going, there is no way the Broncos are going to be able to keep up.

Keys To Broncos Win:
If the Patriots' key is scoring, the Broncos must focus all their efforts on keeping it a close game. The offense can't do it, so it's going to come down to the defense.
